2009 best BMW S1000RR sport bike

A short sprocket driving the camshaft through an intermediate gear helps the S1000RR’s engine help provide what BMW promises to be “supreme revving qualities at highest speeds as well as exact maintenance of valve timing with very compact dimensions”.

The S1000RR also features a cylinder bore of 80mm, which is larger than the 74.5mm bore found on the Suzuki GSX-R1000, 76mm bore found on the Honda CBR1000RR and Kawasaki ZX-10R and the 78mm bore in Yamaha’s YZF-R1.

BMW says the S1000RR’s engine has a maximum output of 193 horses at 13,000 rpm and maximum torque of 82.5 lb-ft at 9,750 rpm. The engine is said to weigh 131.8 lbs.

The S1000RR’s exhaust works on the 4-in-2-in-1 principle: four individual manifolds of equal length join into two pipes beneath the engine block before again merging into a single large-volume pre-silencer. Fully controlled interference pipes housed in the two connection pipes. The two connection pipes each house fully controlled interference pipe butterflies which open or close to moderate exhaust flow. BMW says the system provides a “homogenous” power and torque curve.

BMW also tried to make the S1000RR as light as possible to maximize power to weight ratio. The S1000RR has a claimed dry weight of 403 lb (and 450 lb wet), for a power-to-weight ratio of 1.05 (hp per kilogram), but we’ll see how it measures up when we get our hands on it.

BMW will offer Antilock Brake System and Dynamic Traction Control options for the S1000RR. The “Race ABS” system was developed for both the road and the track, and its components are said to add just 5.3 lb to the bike’s overall weight. The DTC works in conjunction with ABS and offers four modes, Rain, for wet conditions, Sport, for regular road use, Race for track use, and Slick for racing with slicker tires. The Rain mode limits power to 77%, while Slick mode disables the ABS on the rear wheel and turns off the bike’s “Wheelie Protection”.

Well, it’s not quite as clear cut as that. While cornering on the brand new Bridgestone BT-003RS tires the RC8R leans with great willingness and turning from an extreme left lean to an extreme right is the easiest thing in the world. Only the 2009 Kawasaki ZX-6R felt better in this area on Almeria.

The Brembo monoblocks worked very precisely on the RC8R with a fantastic initial bite. The 43mm WP USD fork felt fine, but not with the same feedback as the Ninja. The new fully adjustable WP mono shock must have helped a lot at the rear because the RC8R could be fired very hard out of the corners without much of a rear wheel slide. The RC8R was also of the best bikes along with the 600s for a circuit that can be ridden in second gear between the two straights. Plenty of low-end, traction-friendly V-twin torque.

Considering the fact that the 1198 RC8R loses hugely to the liter fours from third gear and up down the straight the late braking abilities need to be very good to stand a chance. But luckily for RC8 owners the RC8R does make mincemeat of all the 600s.

VP of BMW Motorrad USA, told the U.S. moto press invited to Miller by BMW that once the decision to enter the literbike market was made only four years ago, two things were established immediately: price point and using a known quantity, so-to-speak, for the basic architecture.Naturally BMW would put its own twist on the mill, like the use of camshaft finger followers for actuation of the Ti valves; a design borrowed from BMW’s Formula One race car efforts. This was done almost exclusively for the purpose of high revs allowed by the compact, lightweight design according to BMW Motorrad Motorsport superbike team marketing and sponsoring manager, Andreas Ederer (he was prudent to not reveal actual rev limits set on the race S1000RR race bike when pressed by journalists).

The pertinent numbers are a claimed 193 horsepower (at the crankshaft) and a 403.5-lb claimed dry weight. In a ready-to-ride form including fuel, BMW says to expect 450 lbs of weight. DTC Dynamic Traction Control is an appealing option, as is the Race ABS that adds just 5.3 lbs to the bike’s weight. Also innovative is the RR’s variable-length intake tracts that work in harmony with a 14,200-rpm redline, the highest among its rivals.

BMW didn’t try to break any new ground in choosing an inline-Four engine with an aluminum frame for the S1000RR. In its foray into the highly competitive literbike market, the German manufacturer followed the tried and tested model that has proven so successful for its Japanese competitors.

BMW did employ technology from its Formula 1 program into the S1000RR’s cylinder head. The S1000RR’s four extra-light titanium intake and exhaust valves per cylinder are operated by equally light single cam followers. According to BMW, the cam followers weigh 11 grams (0.388 ounces), almost 50% lighter than what BMW uses in its K-series motorcycles. BMW says the light and tiny cam followers gave their engineers more freedom in choosing ideal valve lift curves to optimize performance.

BMW's K Bikes Get A Bigger And Stronger Engine, Plus New Suspension Upgrades

BMW's four-cylinder K-bikes all receive a new larger 1293cc engine (from the previous 1157cc), with the 136cc displacement boost achieved via a 1mm bore increase and additional 5.3mm stroke. Connecting rods that are nine grams lighter work with 12-gram-lighter pistons and revised cam timing to give an extra 8.0 horsepower (for a claimed total of 175 at the crank) at 9250 rpm-1000 rpm lower than the 1200-and 7.4 ft-lb more torque (now 103 ft-lb) over the old engine. Also assisting in this area is a redesigned exhaust system utilizing a significantly shorter muffler and an exhaust valve in the collector; weight for the stainless steel unit has dropped from 22.9 pounds to 20.7 pounds, complete with catalytic converter.

Interesting options include the same power-shifter and 2D instrument cluster setup found on the HP2 boxer twin, and an "anti-spin control" system integrated into the standard ABS setup.

The K-bikes' Duolever front suspension gets a new lower longitudinal arm made from forged aluminum alloy that replaces the previous steel unit (reducing unsprung weight by 2.2 pounds), while the upper fork bridge also saves weight with a new hollowed-out design. A slightly redesigned wheel carrier and pivot point sharpens handling while incrementally increasing wheelbase. Spring and damping rates both front and rear have been firmed up, and the optional new electronically adjustable ESA II suspension system now not only can adjust damping and spring preload, but spring rate as well. By progressively pushing an Elastogran plastic sleeve (that assists the spring during compression) inside the metal spring via a stepper motor, the spring's rate can actually be altered.

The K1300R gains the same engine and suspension upgrades as the S model, with peak power incrementally down at 173 horsepower but identical torque figures. A shorter final drive ratio (2.91 versus 2.82) should result in quicker acceleration, however. While the K1200R had slightly steeper (more agile) steering geometry than its K1200S cousin, the K1300R has identical steering numbers to the K1300S. Most of the same performance options such as the power-shifter, ESA II electronic suspension system, 2D instrument cluster and anti-spin traction control are available for the K1300R as well.

The K1300GT's powerplant is basically the same as the R and S models with engine tuning biased more toward low-end torque. Horsepower is rated at 160 at the crank, with torque measuring 99 ft-lb at 8000 rpm; there is said to be significantly more torque at lower rpm levels, with 80 percent of the engine's maximum torque available from 3500 rpm. The shift lever now runs in special anti-friction bearings for faster and more precise gearchanges, and the fairing has undergone some subtle modifications, including new integrated tipover protectors. Steering geometry numbers remain the same more-relaxed setup from the previous K1200GT, but the new Duolever aluminum control arm gets fitted to the GT as well. The latest ESA II electronic suspension adjustment is likewise available on the GT as an option.

But one of the most important improvements to the K series BMWs (in our opinion) is the surprising move to conventional turn signal switchgear, with a single conventional push-to-cancel switch on the left handlebar finally replacing the tedious and idiosyncratic multiple-button turn signal switchgear of previous BMWs. Snicking the bike into gear and heading down the pit lane, you quickly realize that this is definitely no ordinary inline four, and certainly nothing like the previous generation R1. Despite its more oversquare dimensions (the new powerplant sports bore/stroke figures of 78 x 52.2mm versus the previous 77 x 53.6mm measurements), the new engine has an abundance of torque at lower rpms that its predecessor could only fantasize about. Even with the same tall first gear (albeit with two extra teeth on the rear sprocket), the new Yamaha effortlessly pulled away from a stop without any of the deft clutch manipulation usually required, and it's a sure bet the R1's enhanced low-end and midrange power will pay dividends in real-world street use. No longer will the R1 pilot be forced to keep the rpms higher than usual to get serious steam from the engine room. In addition, we found the previous 7000-rpm flat spot of previous generation R1s to be completely banished in the '09 model.

Once the Michelin Pilot Power rubber (U.S. models will be fitted with the new generation Dunlop D210 Qualifier tires) was warmed up after a couple of laps, it was time to put the hammer down and see if the new Yamaha was going to live up to the hype. It didn't take long.
